Mumps and chickenpox at the same time: what to know

Mumps can cause swelling near the cheeks or jaw, fever, headache, and discomfort when chewing. Chickenpox commonly causes an itchy rash that changes into fluid-filled spots before crusting. Having symptoms from both patterns is unusual, but a rash and facial swelling may also have another explanation, so diagnosis should not be made from appearance alone.

Avoid close contact with pregnant people, newborns, and anyone with a weakened immune system while an infectious illness is possible. Chickenpox spreads readily through respiratory droplets and contact with blister fluid; a person with chickenpox can later develop shingles, a related condition.

Contact a GP practice before attending so staff can reduce exposure to others. Keep the person at home, encourage fluids, and use simple food if chewing is uncomfortable. Do not scratch blisters; keep nails short and wash hands often. A clinician may discuss antiviral treatment for selected people and antihistamine treatment for troublesome itch. Do not share towels, cups, or utensils, and follow advice about staying away from school or work.

Arrange prompt clinical advice for a new blistering rash with fever or swelling around the jaw. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, severe drowsiness, confusion, dehydration, a severe headache with neck stiffness, or rapidly worsening redness around a blister. A newborn, pregnant person, or someone with reduced immunity should receive same-day advice after possible exposure or symptoms.

Ask which findings support mumps, chickenpox, or another illness; whether testing is needed; how long isolation should last; which medicines are suitable; and whether household contacts need vaccination advice.
