What should you know about multiple small lumps in neck?

Lymph nodes sit in groups along the neck and may enlarge while the immune system responds to a throat, dental, skin, or respiratory infection. Several small, tender lumps that appear during an illness may settle as the illness improves. A lump can also arise from the thyroid, salivary glands, skin, or another tissue. A neck lump is a common presentation of several conditions, including lymphoma and head and neck cancer, but a lump does not by itself identify the cause.

A clinician will consider location, tenderness, firmness, movement, recent infections, dental symptoms, voice or swallowing changes, and how the lumps have changed over time. Examination may be followed by imaging or a biopsy when the findings warrant it.

Arrange an appointment if the lumps do not settle, keep returning, or have no clear link to a recent illness. Note when you first noticed them, whether they are painful, and whether their size or number changes. Mention night sweats, unexplained weight change, persistent fever, fatigue, dental problems, tobacco or alcohol exposure, and any previous cancer history. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press the lumps, because this can irritate the area and make changes harder to judge.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing swelling, or swelling with severe illness. Contact a clinician promptly for a hard or fixed lump, a lump above the collarbone, blood in saliva, persistent hoarseness, or unexplained symptoms that continue. Assessment may include thyroid evaluation; thyroid cancer is one possible condition, while thyroid removal surgery is used only when a specialist recommends it for a specific finding.

Ask: Where are the lumps located, and do they feel like lymph nodes? Could an infection, thyroid problem, or dental issue explain them? Do I need imaging or a biopsy? Which changes should prompt faster review?
