What should you know about multiple sebaceous cysts?

The term sebaceous cyst is commonly used for an epidermoid cyst, a sac beneath the skin filled with keratin. These lumps may feel smooth, round, and mobile, and some have a small central opening. They can occur on the face, neck, trunk, or other areas. Multiple lumps may be unrelated cysts, or they may reflect a tendency for cysts to form. A diagnosis should not be made from appearance alone because other skin lumps can look similar.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or try to drain a cyst at home; this can push material deeper and increase irritation or infection. Note each lump’s location, size, tenderness, and changes, and arrange a dermatology review for confirmation. An undisturbed cyst may only need observation. If it is painful or inflamed, a clinician may discuss an intralesional steroid injection or another approach. Recurrent or troublesome cysts may be treated with cyst removal, while a collection that has become an abscess may require abscess drainage.

Seek prompt care if a lump becomes rapidly larger, hot, red, very tender, or starts draining foul-smelling material. Fever, spreading redness, or feeling unwell can signal an infection needing timely treatment. Have any firm, fixed, bleeding, ulcerated, or persistently changing lump examined, especially when its appearance differs from your other cysts.

Ask how the diagnosis was made, whether any lump needs imaging or sampling, which lesions can be watched, and which treatment fits their location and symptoms. Ask what changes should trigger an earlier appointment.
