What should you know about multiple bilobar liver metastases?

The liver has a right lobe and a left lobe. Bilobar disease involves both, so clinicians assess the number, size, and position of deposits, their relationship to blood vessels and bile ducts, and how much healthy liver would remain after treatment. The primary cancer may have started in the bowel, pancreas, or another organ; the liver deposits retain features of the original cancer.

Symptoms can include tiredness, reduced appetite, weight change, discomfort under the right ribs, jaundice, or sometimes no liver-related symptoms. Imaging, blood tests, and tissue review help define the extent and biology. The pattern does not by itself determine one treatment plan.

Ask for a coordinated review of the scans by the oncology, radiology, surgery, and liver teams. Contact the oncology team promptly for new yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, increasing abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, confusion, or rapidly worsening pain. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, fainting, or sudden confusion. Do not wait for a routine scan appointment when these symptoms appear.

Ask which scans define the liver involvement, whether the primary tumour has been confirmed, how liver function affects choices, and whether surgery or ablation is technically suitable. Ask about treatment goals, expected monitoring, side effects, and what symptoms should trigger a same-day call.
