What should you know about multifocal bone metastases?

Cancer cells can travel from their original site and settle in bone. More than one affected area may be found in the spine, pelvis, ribs, or limbs. Imaging helps show where deposits are located and whether a bone is weakened. Blood tests can also assess calcium and other measures relevant to bone health.

Pain, reduced movement, or tenderness may occur, but some deposits cause no symptoms and are found during imaging. The pattern does not identify the original cancer on its own. Breast, lung, and prostate cancers are among cancers that can spread to bone; the care team uses tissue findings, scans, and the previous cancer history to guide treatment.

Keep appointments for imaging and oncology review, and report new pain rather than waiting for it to become severe. Your team may discuss treatment for the original cancer, medicines that support bone strength, radiotherapy for a painful or vulnerable area, and a personalised pain plan.

Use walking aids or activity changes only as advised, because a weakened bone may need protection. Ask about dental checks before some bone-strengthening medicines, and tell clinicians about kidney problems, dental symptoms, numbness, or medicines that affect bleeding.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe bone or back pain, a new inability to stand or walk, or an injury followed by pain, because these can indicate a fracture. New leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or rapidly worsening back pain can signal pressure on the spinal cord and needs emergency assessment.

Which bones are involved, and are any at risk of fracture? Is the spine affected? What is the likely original cancer, and which tests support that view? Would bone-strengthening therapy, radiotherapy, or pain management help? Which symptoms should trigger an emergency call?
