What should you know about Mulligan concept manual therapy?

Short answer
Mulligan concept manual therapy combines gentle therapist-guided joint movement with your active movement to improve comfortable function.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Method
- Guided joint movement paired with active movement
- Goal
- More comfortable movement and better function
- Provider
- A trained physiotherapist
What the concept involves
A physiotherapist positions or glides a joint while you perform a specific movement, such as turning the neck, lifting an arm, or bending a knee. The technique is adjusted to stay within a comfortable range. The aim is to make movement easier during the session and help you practise that improved movement afterward. It may be considered for problems such as cervical spondylosis, myofascial pain syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, or whiplash, depending on the assessment.
What to do before and after treatment
Tell the therapist about recent injury, numbness, weakness, dizziness, osteoporosis, surgery, or medicines that affect bleeding. Wear clothing that allows the involved area to move. During treatment, describe the exact direction that feels easier or worse rather than pushing through sharp pain. Your plan may include repeated home movements, posture changes, strength work, or advice about activity. Follow the prescribed frequency and record whether daily tasks become easier.
When to seek care
Stop the exercise and contact a clinician if treatment causes new or increasing weakness, spreading numbness, severe pain, faintness, or loss of coordination. Seek urgent help for sudden trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or major symptoms after a significant injury. Mild, short-lived soreness can occur after hands-on treatment, but persistent worsening deserves review.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Which joint or movement is being treated? What change should I notice during a session? Which home movement is appropriate, and when should I stop it? How will you assess progress if symptoms fluctuate? Are there reasons this technique should be modified for my health history?

Questions people ask
Is Mulligan concept treatment the same as massage?
No. It focuses on a specific joint glide combined with an active movement, rather than primarily working on soft tissue.
Should the technique hurt?
The movement should be selected and adjusted for comfort; tell the therapist if pain becomes sharp, intense, or progressively worse.
