mRNA vaccines explained

After injection, some cells read the mRNA and make a harmless piece or representation of the target. The immune system responds to that training signal by preparing antibodies and other defences. The mRNA itself does not need to enter the cell nucleus, does not alter your DNA, and is dismantled after use.

Protection develops over time and may vary with the vaccine, the infection, prior immunity, and personal health. A vaccine reduces the chance of serious illness for its intended target but does not remove every possibility of infection.

Bring your vaccination history and mention allergies, pregnancy, immune-suppressing medicines, and any recent illness. Follow the schedule given by your healthcare professional. Temporary arm discomfort or tiredness can be managed with rest and fluids; ask before taking medicine for symptoms.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth or throat, collapse, or a rapidly spreading rash. Seek prompt assessment for chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or a markedly irregular heartbeat after a dose. Contact your clinician if a reaction is intense, persistent, or worsening.

Ask what target the vaccine covers, when protection is expected, whether another dose is advised, and which reactions should be reported.
