mRNA Vaccine

An mRNA vaccine gives cells temporary instructions to make a harmless germ protein, which helps the immune system prepare a response.

The mRNA is not the germ itself. Cells use the instructions for a short time, then break them down. The immune system can recognise the protein made from those instructions and develop a response to it.

mRNA works in the cell fluid, where proteins are made. It does not need to enter the cell nucleus, which is where DNA is kept. The vaccine formulation helps protect the mRNA until it reaches cells after injection.

mRNA technology may be used in COVID-19 vaccination. The product offered, dose schedule and eligibility can change with current health guidance, your age, previous doses and medical circumstances.
