What should you know about MRIdian radiotherapy?

MRIdian is a radiotherapy system that combines an MRI scanner with a radiation source. MRI images can show the treatment target and nearby organs while the patient is positioned for treatment. The team may use these images to confirm anatomy, account for movement, and adapt the planned radiation when the clinical plan allows. This can be relevant for selected tumours that move with breathing or changes in nearby organs. The treatment is tailored to the diagnosis, target location, previous treatment, and overall health; it is not suitable for every patient.

Your radiation team will explain the treatment plan, positioning, appointment sequence, and any preparation such as fasting or bladder instructions. Tell them about implanted metal or electronic devices, kidney problems, pregnancy, previous radiotherapy, and medicines. You may need to lie still in a specific position while the system takes images and delivers radiation. Ask how skin care, food, activity, and work may be affected. The team will explain expected effects for the body area treated and how these will be monitored.

Contact your oncology team promptly for severe or rapidly worsening pain, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, new confusion, marked weakness, a seizure, or bleeding that does not settle. For treatment to the head or neck, new trouble breathing or swallowing needs urgent assessment. For treatment near the bowel or bladder, report inability to pass urine, severe abdominal pain, or blood in urine or stool. Emergency symptoms such as collapse or severe breathing difficulty need immediate help.
