What should you know about MRI scanner uses?

MRI can distinguish many soft tissues more clearly than examinations that mainly show bone. Depending on the body area, it can help assess the brain, spine, joints, pelvis, abdomen, breasts and blood vessels. In oncology, clinicians may use MRI to describe a mass, examine nearby tissues, look for spread within the area being scanned, or compare images during follow-up.

Different sequences highlight different tissue features. Contrast may be offered when it could make blood flow or abnormal tissue easier to evaluate. An MRI result is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings and other tests; an image alone does not establish a cancer diagnosis.

Bring the referral or clinical question and tell the team about previous scans, operations, implants, metal fragments, kidney problems, pregnancy or claustrophobia. Follow instructions about food, drink, medicines and contrast. During the examination, staying still helps reduce image blur. Ask when and how the report will reach the clinician who requested it.

Seek urgent care for sudden weakness, new speech difficulty, a seizure, severe sudden headache, serious injury, chest pain or severe breathing difficulty. For non-urgent symptoms, arrange clinical assessment rather than choosing MRI based on a symptom alone. The appropriate test depends on the suspected problem, timing and your medical history.
