What should you know about an MRI needle biopsy?

Short answer
An MRI-guided needle biopsy uses magnetic resonance images to guide a needle toward a selected area and collect tissue for laboratory examination.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
MRI helps the clinician see the target and plan a safe path for the needle, especially when the area is clearer on MRI than on other scans. After skin cleaning and local anaesthetic, the needle is guided through a small opening and one or more tissue samples are taken. A pressure dressing may be applied afterward.
The sample goes to a pathology laboratory. A pathologist examines its cells and may use stains such as immunohistochemistry to identify features. The report can help distinguish benign tissue from cancer and describe features that guide treatment. MRI guidance shows where the sample came from, but the laboratory report provides the tissue diagnosis.
How to prepare and recover
Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, allergies, implanted devices, pregnancy, and any difficulty lying in the required position. Follow instructions about medicines and eating or drinking. Arrange help if sedation is planned. Keep the dressing clean, avoid strenuous activity for the advised period, and ask when results will be discussed. Further testing, genomic tumour profiling, or treatment is considered only after the findings and your clinical picture are reviewed.
When to seek care
Call the biopsy team for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or pain that is worsening rather than easing. Seek urgent care for fainting, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, or rapidly increasing swelling. These signs need prompt assessment and do not establish what the tissue result will be.
Questions for your doctor
Why is MRI guidance suitable for this target? Which medicines should I pause? Will local anaesthetic or sedation be used? When should I expect the pathology report, and who will explain it? Could the result change the need for surgery, chemotherapy, or another scan?
Questions people ask
Does an MRI needle biopsy confirm cancer immediately?
No. The tissue must be processed and examined, and the final report may take time.
Can I drive home afterward?
This depends on sedation, the biopsy site, and clinic advice; arrange transport if instructed.
