What should you know about MRI DEXA scan?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of organs, joints, muscles, and other soft tissues. It does not measure bone strength. A DEXA scan, also called a bone-density scan, uses low-dose X-rays to assess bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and spine. The word DEXA may refer to the scanner or the examination itself, so a request mentioning both MRI and DEXA may describe separate tests for different clinical questions.

For MRI, tell the imaging team about metal implants, a pacemaker, medication pumps, kidney problems, pregnancy, or anxiety in enclosed spaces. Remove metal objects and follow instructions about food or drink if contrast or sedation is planned. For DEXA, wear clothing without metal and mention recent contrast studies or supplements containing calcium, because the service may ask you to reschedule. Bring previous imaging reports when available.

These scans are usually arranged routinely, but seek urgent medical help for sudden weakness, severe breathing difficulty, a new inability to walk, or an injury with severe pain or deformity. After MRI contrast, urgent assessment is needed for facial swelling, wheezing, faintness, or widespread hives. Contact the imaging service promptly if you cannot safely lie still or have a device whose MRI compatibility is uncertain.

Ask which test answers your specific question, whether you need both examinations, whether contrast is planned, and when you will receive the report. You can also ask how an existing implant will be checked before MRI and what a DEXA result may change in your care.
