What should you know about an MRI brain scanner?

Short answer

A brain MRI scanner uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images without ionising radiation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Energy used
Magnetic fields and radio waves.
Radiation
No ionising radiation is used.
Key requirement
Keep the head still during imaging.

What the scan can show

The scanner creates images in several planes, helping clinicians examine brain tissue, the coverings of the brain, blood vessels, and structures around the skull. Different sequences highlight fluid, swelling, bleeding, scarring, or a mass in different ways. Contrast may be recommended when it could make certain areas easier to distinguish. MRI findings are interpreted with symptoms, examination, and sometimes other tests; an image does not by itself establish the cause of a change.

Preparing for the scan

Tell the team about pacemakers, clips, implants, metal fragments, kidney disease, pregnancy, and previous contrast reactions. Remove jewellery, cards, hearing aids, and other metal items as instructed. You will need to keep your head still while the table moves through the scanner, and ear protection is usually provided for the loud sounds. If enclosed spaces are difficult, discuss options before the appointment.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, a seizure, collapse, or rapidly worsening confusion. After contrast, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat. These symptoms need immediate assessment and should not wait for a scheduled scan.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why brain MRI is recommended, whether contrast is needed, how long the appointment may take, and when the report will be reviewed. Ask whether you need help with stillness or enclosed-space anxiety and what symptoms should trigger urgent care.

Questions people ask

Is a brain MRI the same as a general MRI scan?

The scanner technology is the same, but the sequences and positioning are selected for the brain and the clinical question.

Does a brain MRI always need contrast?

No. The radiology team decides whether contrast adds useful information after considering the reason for the scan and your medical history.
