What should you know about mouse bite rabies?

A mouse bite should be cleaned promptly and assessed by a clinician, because rabies risk depends on the animal and exposure details. Rabies is uncommon in some settings, but symptoms cannot be used to safely rule out risk immediately after a bite. Do not wait for a wound to look serious before seeking advice.

The clinician will ask whether the skin was broken, whether saliva contacted the eyes or mouth, where the bite occurred, when it happened, and whether the mouse was wild, behaving unusually or available for official assessment. They may also consider tetanus protection, wound infection and damage to nerves or tendons. A small-looking wound can still need careful cleaning and follow-up.

Wash the wound thoroughly with running water and soap, then cover it with a clean dressing. Do not scrub deeply, seal the wound with household glue or apply irritants. Avoid handling the animal again; tell local health or animal-control authorities if it can be safely identified. Contact urgent medical care as soon as possible to discuss Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis and wound management.

Seek urgent help for a bite to the face, hand, eye or genitals, heavy bleeding, loss of movement or sensation, a deep wound, severe pain, spreading redness, swelling, pus or fever. Emergency assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, collapse or confusion. Do not delay because the animal escaped, the bite was painless or the wound has started to close.

Ask whether rabies prevention, a tetanus booster, antibiotics or wound review is needed. Tell the clinician the exact time and place, the animal's appearance and behaviour, the wound location, your previous Rabies Vaccination history and any immune-system condition or medicine.
