What is the most common virus causing croup?

Croup is a viral illness affecting the voice box and upper windpipe, usually in young children. Parainfluenza viruses are the usual trigger, although other respiratory viruses can cause the same pattern. A child may first develop cold symptoms, then a harsh, seal-like cough, a hoarse voice or noisy breathing that is more noticeable at night. A barking cough is a common presentation of croup; it does not by itself show how severe the airway swelling is.

Keep your child calm and sitting upright, because crying can make noisy breathing worse. Offer frequent drinks and check them regularly, including overnight if symptoms are active. Fever or discomfort can be managed with a child-appropriate medicine according to the label or a clinician’s advice. Do not use leftover antibiotics, and avoid steam because hot water can cause burns. A child health consultation can assess breathing and decide whether prescription treatment or nebuliser treatment is needed.

Seek urgent medical help if noisy breathing occurs while your child is resting, or if the skin pulls in between the ribs or at the neck. Emergency help is also needed for blue or grey lips, unusual sleepiness, drooling with difficulty swallowing, pauses in breathing, or an inability to drink. A cough or fever with worsening breathing deserves prompt assessment, even if the illness began like a common cold.

Ask whether the breathing noise is stridor, whether treatment is needed, how to give it, and which changes should prompt reassessment. Ask how long your child should stay home and whether siblings need any precautions.
