When miscarriage most commonly happens

Early pregnancy is a period when development may stop because the pregnancy is not progressing normally. The timing does not tell you that something you did caused the loss. Bleeding, cramps, or a change in pregnancy symptoms can occur with miscarriage, but they can also happen in a continuing pregnancy. An ultrasound and, when appropriate, blood tests help clarify what is happening.

Contact your maternity team or clinician if you have bleeding, pelvic pain, or fluid passing during pregnancy. Keep track of the bleeding and pain, and mention your pregnancy stage, blood group if known, and any previous scan. A transvaginal ultrasound may be offered to check the pregnancy and uterus. If miscarriage is confirmed, care may involve waiting for the tissue to pass, medicine, or a procedure; your clinician can explain the benefits and practical details of each option.

Seek emergency care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. These symptoms can signal significant blood loss or infection. Emotional distress after a loss also merits support, especially if sleep, eating, or daily activities become difficult.
