Most common DVT symptoms

Short answer
The most common DVT symptoms are swelling, warmth, tenderness and aching in one leg, often affecting the calf or thigh, although some DVTs cause few symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- One-sided leg swelling and tenderness
- Emergency concern
- Sudden breathing or chest symptoms
What this means
A deep vein thrombosis is a clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg. The affected limb may feel heavier, look more swollen than the other side or become warmer and discoloured. These symptoms overlap with muscle injury, infection and other conditions, so appearance alone cannot confirm a clot. A clinician may need an examination and urgent tests to assess blood flow.
What to do
If one leg becomes newly swollen, painful or warm without a clear explanation, seek same-day medical advice. Mention recent surgery, prolonged travel or sitting, pregnancy, previous clots, cancer or hormone treatment because these details affect assessment. Do not massage the painful area or start blood-thinning medicine without medical advice.
When to seek care
Call emergency services immediately for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens with breathing, coughing blood, fainting or a very fast heartbeat. A clot can travel to the lungs and become life-threatening. New one-sided leg swelling with severe pain also needs urgent assessment, even when breathing is normal.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which test is appropriate, whether medicines or travel restrictions are needed and which changes in leg or breathing symptoms should send you straight to emergency care.

Questions people ask
Can a DVT have no obvious symptoms?
Yes. Some clots cause few or no noticeable symptoms, which is why risk factors and clinical assessment matter.
Should I massage a swollen calf?
No. Avoid massaging a suspected clot and obtain urgent medical advice.
