What should you know about modified radical mastectomy?

The surgeon removes breast tissue, the nipple and areola, and often the lining over the chest muscle. Unlike an older radical operation, the main chest muscle is generally preserved. Lymph nodes under the arm may be removed so a laboratory can examine them. The final plan depends on tumour location, size, spread, previous treatment, and overall health.

A mastectomy is different from a lumpectomy, which removes the tumour with a margin while preserving much of the breast. Some people discuss reconstruction at the same operation or later. Chemotherapy before surgery may be offered in selected situations to shrink disease or guide treatment planning.

Ask the surgical team about drains, medicines, wound care, arm movement, bathing, driving, and returning to work. Arrange practical help at home and wear loose clothing after discharge. Gentle shoulder exercises are often introduced according to the team's instructions. Report new arm heaviness, swelling, tightness, or reduced movement because lymphoedema therapy may help manage related problems. Discuss prostheses, reconstruction, and emotional support before surgery if those choices matter to you.

Contact the surgical service for increasing redness, warmth, wound separation, pus, fever, worsening pain, or a drain that suddenly stops working. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden swelling of an arm. A new breast or nipple change should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed; breast cancer and Paget Disease of the Breast have different presentations and need clinical evaluation.

Ask why this operation is recommended, whether lymph nodes will be sampled or removed, and whether breast reconstruction or a lumpectomy is suitable. Ask how pathology results affect further treatment, what sensation may change, and which exercises are safe at each stage.
