What should you know about moderate hydrosalpinx?

A fallopian tube can become scarred or sealed after pelvic inflammation, previous surgery, endometriosis or another pelvic process. Fluid then collects inside the tube. Some people have pelvic discomfort or unusual discharge, while others have no symptoms and learn about it during fertility assessment. The affected tube cannot reliably carry an egg in the usual way, and fluid from it may affect the environment around an embryo.

Imaging, often ultrasound and sometimes a more detailed tubal test, helps show the tube and nearby structures. Your clinician may also assess for active infection and review fertility history before recommending observation, surgery or assisted reproduction.

Book a gynaecology or fertility consultation to discuss the scan findings, symptoms and pregnancy plans. Treatment can include addressing active pelvic infection, removing or closing the affected tube, or planning IVF when appropriate. A salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube; whether it is suitable depends on the tube, ovarian reserve, previous operations and your fertility goals.

Do not self-treat pelvic pain or discharge with leftover antibiotics. Bring previous scan reports and operation details, and mention any prior pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy or fertility treatment.

Seek prompt care for new pelvic pain with fever, vomiting, foul-smelling discharge or feeling faint. If you could be pregnant and develop one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or bleeding, seek urgent assessment because an ectopic pregnancy needs rapid review. Sudden severe pain also warrants emergency care.
