What Should You Know About a Mock MRI Scanner?

A mock MRI scanner is a practice device that lets you experience the MRI environment before a real scan, helping you prepare for the space, sounds, positioning, and stillness involved. It is designed for rehearsal rather than diagnosis. The equipment may resemble the opening and table of an MRI system, but it does not create the clinical images used by the radiology team.

During a practice session, you can learn how the table moves, where your body will be positioned, and how close the scanner is around you. You may also hear recorded or simulated scanning sounds. This can make the real appointment feel more predictable, particularly if enclosed spaces, unfamiliar equipment, or loud noises make you tense.

The rehearsal also gives you a chance to practise staying still and communicating with the MRI team. Depending on the service, staff may explain the call button, headphones, or other comfort measures available during the examination. A mock scanner cannot predict your results and cannot replace the instructions from the team performing your actual MRI.

Tell the radiology or oncology team what concerns you most, such as claustrophobia, difficulty lying flat, pain, or hearing sensitivity. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the facility's instructions about metal items and personal belongings. Use the practice time to ask how you will signal discomfort, whether you can listen to music, and what support is available if you need a pause.

If you have implanted medical equipment, metal fragments, or a previous reaction to MRI contrast, mention it before the real appointment as well as before any practice visit. The mock setup does not replace the safety screening required for an MRI scanner.

Contact the imaging or oncology team before the appointment if anxiety, pain, breathing difficulty, or limited movement may prevent you from lying still. They can discuss practical adjustments and whether another form of support is appropriate. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, fainting, or a sudden serious reaction after a medical procedure; a mock MRI visit itself should not be used to assess those symptoms.

Ask whether a mock scanner is available, what the rehearsal includes, and how closely it matches the equipment used for your scan. You can also ask what to do if you feel panicked, whether a support person can attend, how medication decisions are handled, and which implants or metal objects must be reported before screening.
