Miscarriage without bleeding: what to know
Updated

Short answer
No bleeding does not rule out miscarriage. Some people have no visible bleeding because the pregnancy has stopped developing but tissue has not passed. Others have symptoms that are caused by something else. Contact a pregnancy-care clinician for assessment rather than waiting for bleeding to begin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key point
- Bleeding may be delayed or absent.
- Assessment
- Ultrasound and follow-up may clarify the diagnosis.
Why bleeding may be absent
Bleeding often begins when the body starts passing pregnancy tissue, so there can be a delay after a pregnancy stops developing. A loss may also be discovered during a planned scan when symptoms are limited or absent. A change in nausea or breast tenderness is not enough to diagnose miscarriage because normal pregnancy symptoms fluctuate.
How it is checked
Arrange an appointment and share the date of your last period, any pain or discharge, previous scan results, and medicines. A Transvaginal Ultrasound can help assess the pregnancy and uterus; sometimes follow-up testing is needed when the timing is uncertain. If miscarriage is confirmed, your clinician can explain Medical Management of Miscarriage and Surgical Management of Miscarriage alongside other care options.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding if it starts, fever, or feeling very unwell. These signs can indicate a complication that needs prompt assessment, even if bleeding was absent earlier.
Questions for your doctor
What does my scan show? Is repeat testing needed? Could my dates be earlier than expected? What symptoms should prompt emergency care? If a loss is confirmed, which management options fit my situation?
