Miscarriage and itchy skin: what to know

Hormonal changes can affect the skin during and after pregnancy. Itching can also follow a change in soap, detergent, sanitary products, or medication used during miscarriage care. A rash, swelling, blisters, yellowing of the skin, dark urine, or severe widespread itching needs medical review because it may point to an allergy, infection, or a liver-related problem. The timing of bleeding and cramping is more relevant to miscarriage assessment than skin sensation.

Use fragrance-free moisturiser, avoid hot showers and new scented products, and keep nails short to reduce skin damage from scratching. Record when the itching began, where it is, and any new medicine or product. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. If miscarriage is suspected, a clinician may use a Transvaginal Ultrasound to check the pregnancy and uterus. Treatment choices may include Medical Management of Miscarriage or Surgical Management of Miscarriage, depending on the findings and your preferences.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever, feeling very unwell, or trouble breathing. Get prompt advice for facial or tongue swelling, a rapidly spreading rash, or itching with yellow skin. These warning signs need assessment regardless of whether the itch seems connected to pregnancy loss.
