What should you know about miscarriage during period?

A period follows the usual menstrual cycle. A miscarriage happens after a pregnancy has started, and bleeding may include cramps, clots, or tissue. The timing and appearance can overlap, so looking at blood alone cannot establish whether a miscarriage occurred.

A clinician may ask about the last menstrual period, a positive pregnancy test, bleeding pattern, pain, and any tissue passed. A Transvaginal Ultrasound and pregnancy hormone testing may help clarify whether a pregnancy is present and whether it is developing in the uterus.

If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and contact a clinician if it is positive, unclear, or symptoms continue. Keep track of bleeding, cramps, dizziness, and the date symptoms began. Do not place anything in the vagina while bleeding unless a clinician advises it.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, pain mainly on one side, fainting, severe dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling weak and unwell. These symptoms need prompt assessment, including assessment for ectopic pregnancy.
