Short answer

Minor ringworm is a contagious superficial fungal infection that often causes an itchy, scaly, expanding patch with a clearer centre.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
A superficial fungus, not a worm
Typical edge
Itchy, scaly, and more defined than the centre
Spread control
Keep skin dry and do not share towels or clothing

How it appears

Ringworm has no connection to worms. The fungus lives in the outer layer of skin and may spread through close skin contact or shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, or bedding. A Skin Rash may start as a small itchy area and develop a more defined edge; Skin Scaling can be more visible at the border. The appearance can overlap with eczema and other rashes, so a clinician may examine the edge or test a scale sample if the diagnosis is uncertain.

What to do at home

Use the recommended antifungal exactly as directed and continue for the advised course, even if the itch improves early. Wash hands after touching the area, keep the skin dry, avoid sharing towels or clothing, and wash items that contact the patch. Do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash because it can alter the appearance and allow infection to persist. Widespread, recurrent, scalp, or nail involvement may need Oral Antifungal Treatment rather than only Topical Antifungal Treatment.

When to seek care

Arrange assessment if the patch is spreading, treatment is not helping, the diagnosis is uncertain, or another household member develops a similar rash. Seek prompt care for pus, marked pain, fever, rapidly worsening redness, or involvement of the eyes. Scalp lesions, extensive disease, or infection in someone with reduced immunity should be reviewed because hair and deeper skin structures may need different management.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the rash is Ringworm, which antifungal form suits its location, and how long treatment should continue. Discuss whether close contacts or pets need assessment, how to clean shared fabrics, and when a persistent patch should be tested or treated with oral medicine.

Questions people ask

Can minor ringworm spread to other people?

Yes. Direct contact and shared personal items can transfer the fungus, so covering the area and avoiding shared fabrics can reduce spread.

Why avoid steroid cream alone on ringworm?

A steroid may reduce redness while allowing the fungus to continue, which can make the rash harder to recognise and treat.
