What should you know about minor ringworm?

Ringworm has no connection to worms. The fungus lives in the outer layer of skin and may spread through close skin contact or shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, or bedding. A Skin Rash may start as a small itchy area and develop a more defined edge; Skin Scaling can be more visible at the border. The appearance can overlap with eczema and other rashes, so a clinician may examine the edge or test a scale sample if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Use the recommended antifungal exactly as directed and continue for the advised course, even if the itch improves early. Wash hands after touching the area, keep the skin dry, avoid sharing towels or clothing, and wash items that contact the patch. Do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash because it can alter the appearance and allow infection to persist. Widespread, recurrent, scalp, or nail involvement may need Oral Antifungal Treatment rather than only Topical Antifungal Treatment.

Arrange assessment if the patch is spreading, treatment is not helping, the diagnosis is uncertain, or another household member develops a similar rash. Seek prompt care for pus, marked pain, fever, rapidly worsening redness, or involvement of the eyes. Scalp lesions, extensive disease, or infection in someone with reduced immunity should be reviewed because hair and deeper skin structures may need different management.
