What should you know about minor burn marks?
Updated

Short answer
Minor burn marks can change as the skin heals; gentle wound care and protection from sunlight may support recovery, while worsening changes need review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why a mark can remain
After a burn, new skin may look red, pink, brown or lighter than the surrounding area. A deeper injury can also leave a change in texture or a raised area. Colour often shifts gradually as inflammation settles, and the final appearance depends on the burn depth, location, skin tone and how the wound healed.
A mark on newly healed skin is different from an active wound. Persistent tenderness, cracking, oozing or increasing thickness suggests that the area needs assessment rather than cosmetic care alone.
How to care for healing skin
Keep any open area clean and covered according to the advice you received. Once the surface has fully closed, moisturise gently if the skin feels dry, avoid picking or scrubbing and protect the area from direct sunlight with clothing or a suitable sunscreen. Friction from tight clothing can irritate a healing mark.
Do not apply bleaching products, strong acids or unprescribed creams to recently injured skin. A clinician can explain whether scar care, silicone products or another option is suitable after examining the area. Minor Burn Treatment and Wound Care and Dressing provide further guidance on the injury and its covering.
When a mark needs review
Arrange medical review if redness spreads, pain or warmth increases, the area swells, drainage or fever develops, the wound reopens, or a raised scar limits movement. Seek urgent care for a burn that is deep, extensive, caused by electricity or chemicals, or located on the face, hands, feet, genitals or a major joint.
Questions for your doctor
Ask when the skin is ready for moisturiser or sunscreen, whether the colour change is expected, how to reduce itching and whether a raised or tight scar needs treatment.
