What should you know about minor burn marks?

After a burn, new skin may look red, pink, brown or lighter than the surrounding area. A deeper injury can also leave a change in texture or a raised area. Colour often shifts gradually as inflammation settles, and the final appearance depends on the burn depth, location, skin tone and how the wound healed.

A mark on newly healed skin is different from an active wound. Persistent tenderness, cracking, oozing or increasing thickness suggests that the area needs assessment rather than cosmetic care alone.

Keep any open area clean and covered according to the advice you received. Once the surface has fully closed, moisturise gently if the skin feels dry, avoid picking or scrubbing and protect the area from direct sunlight with clothing or a suitable sunscreen. Friction from tight clothing can irritate a healing mark.

Do not apply bleaching products, strong acids or unprescribed creams to recently injured skin.
