What should you know about mini MRI scanners?

The term mini MRI may describe a compact or specialised scanner with a smaller examination area, often designed for a particular body region. Like a conventional MRI, it creates images without ionising radiation. Its design may make positioning easier for a targeted examination, while the available field of view and image detail depend on the scanner and body part.

A clinician chooses the imaging method based on the question being asked. A focused system may be unsuitable when several regions must be assessed or when a wider view is needed. A Breast MRI and a general MRI Scan have different purposes and protocols, even though both use magnetic resonance.

Tell the imaging team about a pacemaker, implanted pump, metal fragments, cochlear implant, clips, braces, pregnancy, kidney problems, or previous reactions to contrast material. Remove metal items as instructed and follow the centre's guidance about food, drink and medicines.

During the scan, you need to stay still while the system collects images. The technologist can provide hearing protection and usually lets you communicate throughout. Ask whether contrast is planned, which body area will be imaged, how long positioning may take, and when the report will reach your doctor.

An MRI does not normally require emergency aftercare, but contact the imaging or medical team promptly for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, severe dizziness, or other sudden symptoms after contrast. Tell the team before scanning if you may have metal in the body or cannot lie safely in the required position.

Ask what the scan is intended to answer, whether a mini system can provide the needed view, whether contrast is necessary, and how the result will influence the next step. Ask about an alternative if enclosed equipment or still positioning is difficult for you.
