Milk cloudy urine

Urine can look darker or cloudy when you have not had enough fluid; [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/) may also cause thirst, a dry mouth or passing urine less often. Temporary cloudiness can come from crystals, mucus, semen or vaginal discharge mixing with a sample. A sample collected in a clean container gives a more useful picture.

Cloudiness with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort or a strong smell can occur with a [Urinary Tract Infection](/conditions/urinary-tract-infection/). Fever, chills, nausea, vomiting or pain in the side or back raises concern for a [Kidney Infection](/conditions/kidney-infection/). These symptoms need assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Notice when the change began, whether it persists, and whether pain, fever, blood, discharge or urinary frequency is present. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Do not take leftover antibiotics, and do not assume that a clear-looking sample rules out infection.

Contact a clinician if the appearance continues, returns repeatedly or occurs with urinary symptoms. They may ask for a urine sample and decide whether further examination or treatment is needed. Mention pregnancy, kidney conditions, diabetes or medicines that could affect urinary health.

Seek prompt medical care for fever with side or back pain, shaking chills, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, marked weakness or difficulty passing urine. These features can signal a more serious urinary problem. Get urgent advice as well if symptoms occur during pregnancy or in a child, older adult or person with a weakened immune system.

Ask whether you need a urine test, which symptoms suggest bladder versus kidney involvement, how much fluid is suitable for you, and which changes should prompt urgent reassessment.
