What should you know about mild turf toe?

Short answer
Mild turf toe is a manageable sprain of the big toe joint that usually improves with protection, activity changes and gradual rehabilitation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What mild turf toe means
Turf toe affects the ligaments and soft tissues beneath the first metatarsophalangeal joint, where the big toe meets the foot. It can happen when the toe is forced upward while the foot is planted, such as during running, jumping or a sudden push-off. Mild injuries may cause tenderness, swelling, bruising or pain when walking on the front of the foot. A toe injury can also produce [Toe Pain](/symptoms/toe-pain/), while persistent stiffness has other possible explanations such as [Hallux Rigidus](/conditions/hallux-rigidus/).
What you can do
Reduce activities that bend the big toe sharply, and use a roomy, supportive shoe with a relatively firm sole. Cold packs wrapped in cloth may help swelling for short periods. Elevate the foot when resting. Do not force stretching while the joint is painful; gentle movement can be introduced as symptoms settle. A clinician or physiotherapist can check stability, walking mechanics and the need for [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) or [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/). Return to sport gradually when ordinary walking and a controlled push-off are comfortable.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if you cannot bear weight, the toe looks deformed, swelling is marked, numbness develops, or pain is worsening rather than settling. Seek prompt care after a forceful injury or if the joint feels unstable. Even a seemingly mild sprain deserves review when symptoms continue to limit walking or sport, because a more substantial ligament injury or a small fracture can need different protection.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which movements should be limited, whether imaging is useful, how long protective footwear is needed, and what signs show that rehabilitation can progress. You can also ask when it is safe to run, jump and return to contact sport.
