What should you know about mild stye?
Updated

Short answer
A mild stye is usually a tender eyelid lump that can improve with warm compresses, but eye pain or vision changes need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful care
- Clean hands and a comfortably warm compress on the closed eyelid
- Avoid
- Squeezing the lump, rubbing the eye, makeup, and contact lenses while sore
What it may mean
A stye forms when a small eyelid gland or eyelash follicle becomes blocked and inflamed. It may appear as a red, sore bump at the eyelid edge, sometimes with local swelling or a small spot of discharge. The lump can feel uncomfortable when blinking. A stye is different from more widespread eyelid inflammation, and redness affecting the eye itself or a change in vision should not be assumed to be a simple stye.
Self-care steps
Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating this through the day. Wash your hands before and after touching the area, and gently clean away crusting. Do not squeeze, pierce, or rub the lump. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid feels better, and do not share towels or cosmetics. A GP can advise if the lump persists, returns often, or needs another treatment.
When to seek care
Arrange urgent assessment for reduced or blurred vision, severe eye pain, pain when moving the eye, marked swelling around the eye, fever, or redness spreading across the cheek. Seek advice if the eye cannot open, discharge is heavy, or the lump is not settling after regular care. These features can indicate infection beyond a local stye and may need prompt treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Is this a stye or another eyelid problem? How should I clean the eyelid, and when can I restart contact lenses or makeup? What should I do if the lump keeps returning?

Questions people ask
Should I pop a stye?
No. Squeezing can spread inflammation and injure the eyelid. Use warmth and seek advice if it persists or worsens.
Can a stye cause eye discharge?
A small amount of local crusting can occur, but heavy discharge, severe redness, pain, or vision changes need medical assessment.
