Mild psoriasis nails: what to know

Psoriasis can affect the nail matrix or nail bed. You may notice tiny dents, roughness, yellow-brown colour, thickening, or a nail lifting from the skin beneath it. Nail changes grow out slowly, so improvement may not be immediate even when inflammation is controlled. Psoriasis can also involve surrounding skin, including Dry Skin, Itchy Skin, or a Skin Rash.

A damaged nail can resemble a fungal infection or injury. The number of affected nails, the pattern of change, and any skin or joint symptoms help a clinician decide whether testing or treatment is needed.

Keep nails trimmed but do not cut into the corners or scrape beneath a lifted nail. Wear gloves for wet work, protect fingertips from knocks, and moisturise the nails and surrounding skin after washing. Avoid biting, cuticle cutting, artificial nails, and aggressive buffing while the area is fragile.

A dermatologist may prescribe treatment for the nail or nearby skin, depending on which part is involved. Share any new Cracked Skin, Peeling Skin, Skin Redness, or Scaly Skin, because these details can help identify the broader pattern.

Arrange a review if a nail becomes painful, swollen, warm, drains fluid, or separates rapidly. Seek advice when several nails change, the nail is limiting hand or foot use, or you develop persistent joint stiffness or swelling. Sudden change in one nail also deserves assessment rather than being assumed to be psoriasis.
