Short answer

Mild orthostatic hypotension is a blood-pressure drop after standing that may cause brief dizziness or blurred vision and should be reviewed if it recurs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical trigger
Standing after sitting or lying down
Immediate response
Sit or lie down when light-headedness begins

Why standing can cause symptoms

When you stand, gravity briefly shifts blood toward the legs. The nervous system normally tightens blood vessels and adjusts the heart rate to maintain circulation to the brain. With orthostatic hypotension, that adjustment may be insufficient, causing light-headedness, blurred vision, weakness, or a feeling that you might faint. Dehydration, illness, prolonged bed rest, heat, and some medicines can contribute. Symptoms may be mild and short-lived, but repeated episodes can increase the risk of falls and deserve assessment.

Reducing episodes

Rise in stages: sit on the edge of the bed, move your ankles, then stand while holding a stable surface. Pause before walking. Drink enough fluid for your health unless a clinician has restricted it, and avoid sudden standing in hot conditions. Sit or lie down immediately if symptoms start. Do not stop blood-pressure or other prescribed medicine without advice; a GP can review timing, dose, hydration, and other possible causes. Keep pathways clear to lower fall risk.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help if dizziness is accompanied by chest pain, severe breathlessness, a new one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, seizure, serious injury, or loss of consciousness. Arrange a GP consultation when episodes recur, worsen, cause falls, or begin after a medicine change. Prompt review is also wise if you have palpitations, ongoing vomiting, or signs of dehydration.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your medicines, fluid intake, blood count, heart rhythm, or nervous-system function could be contributing, and how to measure symptoms safely at home.

Questions people ask

Is occasional dizziness on standing always orthostatic hypotension?

No. Dizziness has several possible causes. Recurrent episodes need an assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Should I change my medicine if this happens?

No. Ask a clinician to review prescribed medicines and timing before making any change.
