What should you know about mild labyrinthitis?

Short answer
Mild labyrinthitis can cause vertigo and imbalance, so treatment centres on safety, hydration, gradual movement and assessment of warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What mild labyrinthitis means
Labyrinthitis affects the inner-ear balance system and can cause a spinning sensation, dizziness, nausea and unsteady walking. Hearing changes or ringing in the ears may occur when the hearing part of the inner ear is involved. Symptoms can follow a viral illness such as a common cold, although other causes of dizziness can look similar. A clinician considers the timing, hearing, neurological symptoms and examination before labelling the problem labyrinthitis.
Supporting recovery
Rest during the worst dizziness, drink fluids in small regular amounts and keep pathways clear to prevent falls. Move your head slowly at first, then gradually resume normal activity as balance allows; avoiding all movement for too long can slow the brain's adjustment. Do not drive, climb or use machinery while dizzy. A clinician may prescribe short-term medicine for severe nausea or vertigo, but these medicines are not suitable for everyone. Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are persistent, recurrent or uncertain.
When to seek urgent care
Get emergency help for sudden weakness or numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, a new severe headache, fainting, chest pain or inability to walk safely. Seek prompt assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe vomiting that prevents fluids, or a rapidly worsening balance problem. These features may indicate something other than an uncomplicated inner-ear illness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits labyrinthitis or another balance disorder, whether your hearing needs testing, and which activities are safe. Ask how long to use any symptom medicine and when balance exercises or referral would help.

Questions people ask
Should I stay completely still?
Rest during severe symptoms, then resume gentle movement gradually as safe movement helps the balance system readjust.
Does ringing in the ears fit labyrinthitis?
It can occur when inner-ear hearing structures are affected, but new or sudden hearing symptoms need prompt assessment.
