Mild keloid: what to know

How the structures involved in Keloid Scars differ from normal

Short answer

A mild keloid is a raised, firm scar that grows beyond the original wound, and early assessment helps guide scar care and treatment choices.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Texture
Keloids are often firm, raised, and smooth.
Trigger
They can follow acne, piercing, surgery, or other skin injury.

What the change means

A keloid forms when scar tissue continues to build after skin injury such as acne, piercing, surgery, or a cut. It can feel smooth, rubbery, itchy, or sore and may become darker or lighter than nearby skin. Unlike a typical flat scar, it extends past the original injury and can continue to enlarge gradually.

A new skin lump is not automatically a keloid. A clinician may examine its borders, texture, colour, and history before discussing treatment.

What you can do

Protect the area from friction, picking, and repeated injury. Keep healing wounds clean and follow aftercare instructions for piercings or procedures. Do not attempt to cut, freeze, or inject the scar yourself, because injury can stimulate more scar tissue.

Treatment depends on size, symptoms, location, and whether the scar is changing. Options may include [Steroid Injection Into The Skin](/treatments/injectables/intralesional-steroid-injection/), laser approaches such as [Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/pulsed-dye-laser-treatment/), or selected surgical plans. Surgery needs a recurrence-prevention discussion.

When to seek care

Book a dermatology assessment if a scar is extending beyond a wound, becoming painful or persistently itchy, catching on clothing, or limiting movement. Seek prompt care for bleeding, ulceration, pus, sudden rapid change, or severe pain. Mention any history of keloids before another piercing or procedure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the lump matches a keloid or another condition, what improvement is realistic, how many treatment visits may be needed, and how recurrence will be reduced. Ask whether [Fractional Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/fractional-laser-treatment/) or another option suits your skin and scar.

Questions people ask

Can a mild keloid disappear on its own?

Keloids may remain or enlarge, so an assessment is useful when a scar keeps rising beyond the original wound.

Can I remove a keloid at home?

No. Cutting, burning, or freezing it yourself can worsen scarring and cause infection.
