What should you know about mild hyperthyroidism treatment?

The thyroid is making more hormone than your body needs, or the blood test pattern suggests early overactivity. Some people have few symptoms; others notice palpitations, heat intolerance, sweating, anxiety, poor sleep or diarrhoea. These symptoms can have other causes, so a clinician interprets thyroid-stimulating hormone alongside thyroid hormone levels and your examination. The cause may include thyroid inflammation, an overactive thyroid area, or an immune thyroid condition.

Arrange follow-up rather than changing medicines on your own. Your clinician may repeat blood tests after an interval to see whether the pattern settles or persists. If symptoms are troublesome, a medicine that slows the heartbeat may be considered when suitable. Antithyroid medicine, radioactive iodine, or surgery may be discussed when ongoing overactivity has a clear cause. Tell the clinician about heart problems, pregnancy plans and all medicines or supplements. Seek advice before taking iodine-containing products.

Get urgent help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, confusion, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat with feeling unwell. Contact a clinician promptly if palpitations persist, weakness worsens, or vomiting and diarrhoea prevent fluids. A planned review is still useful when symptoms are mild, because untreated thyroid overactivity can affect the heart and bones over time.
