Mild Cradle Cap on the Forehead: What to Know
Updated

Short answer
Mild cradle cap on a baby’s forehead is usually managed with gentle washing, softening scale, and observation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common appearance
- Yellowish or dry scale with mild redness
- Key caution
- Do not scrape attached scale
What it means
Cradle cap is infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It can cause greasy or dry yellowish scale and mild redness on the scalp, hairline, eyebrows, or forehead. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is not generally uncomfortable, although some babies may rub the area. Scale can extend beyond the scalp, especially around skin folds. A clinician should check a rash that is very inflamed, wet, painful, or unlike typical cradle cap.
Gentle care at home
Wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat it dry. If scale is firmly attached, a small amount of a suitable emollient can soften it before gentle washing. Use a soft brush or cloth only if the scale loosens easily; never scrape or pull it. Keep products away from the eyes and mouth. Avoid essential oils, adult dandruff products, and medicated creams unless a healthcare professional recommends them. See Emollient Therapy and Topical Antifungal Treatment for treatment options a clinician may consider.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if the forehead becomes increasingly red, swollen, warm, crusted, or sore, or if fluid or pus appears. Seek help if the baby seems unwell, has a fever, feeds poorly, or the rash spreads quickly. Review is also sensible when gentle care does not improve the scale or when the diagnosis is uncertain.
Questions for your doctor
Does this look like cradle cap rather than eczema or infection? Which emollient is suitable for this baby’s face? Should any antifungal treatment be used, and how should it be applied safely near the eyes?
