Mild Cradle Cap on the Forehead: What to Know

Cradle cap is infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It can cause greasy or dry yellowish scale and mild redness on the scalp, hairline, eyebrows, or forehead. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is not generally uncomfortable, although some babies may rub the area. Scale can extend beyond the scalp, especially around skin folds. A clinician should check a rash that is very inflamed, wet, painful, or unlike typical cradle cap.

Wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat it dry. If scale is firmly attached, a small amount of a suitable emollient can soften it before gentle washing. Use a soft brush or cloth only if the scale loosens easily; never scrape or pull it. Keep products away from the eyes and mouth. Arrange medical advice if the forehead becomes increasingly red, swollen, warm, crusted, or sore, or if fluid or pus appears.
