What should you know about mild colonic diverticulosis?

The pouches develop where the bowel wall is weaker. Diverticulosis is different from diverticulitis, in which a pouch becomes inflamed or infected. Diverticulosis itself may be discovered during a scan or bowel examination done for another reason. Constipation or abdominal pain can have many causes and does not by itself establish diverticular disease.

Your clinician may consider your bowel pattern, examination findings, medicines, and the reason the pouches were found. The word mild describes the finding, not every possible future symptom.

Aim for regular bowel movements with fibre-containing foods, adequate fluids when medically suitable, and gradual changes so your gut can adjust. Gentle activity can support bowel function. Do not start supplements or restrict foods solely because pouches were found; individual advice is more useful. Ask why the diverticula were found, whether your symptoms could have another explanation, how to increase fibre safely, which medicines affect bowel function, and what changes should prompt review. Ask whether any planned bowel screening or follow-up still applies.
