What should you know about mild bronchiolitis?

Short answer
Mild bronchiolitis usually needs careful observation, fluids and comfort measures while a young child’s breathing recovers.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Blue colour, pauses, severe pulling-in or inability to drink
The short answer
Mild bronchiolitis usually needs careful observation, fluids and comfort measures while a young child’s breathing recovers. It commonly begins like a cold, then causes cough, faster breathing, crackles or Wheezing. Feeding may take longer because breathing and sucking are harder together. Watch the child’s effort, colour, alertness and wet nappies rather than judging severity by the cough alone.
How bronchiolitis affects a child
Bronchiolitis affects the small airways, which become swollen and produce mucus. Most cases are caused by viruses, so antibiotics do not treat the underlying infection. A mild illness can still change over the next few days, particularly in very young babies or children born early, so a Child Health Consultation can help assess breathing, hydration and feeding.
A low-grade Fever may occur, but the breathing pattern and ability to drink are especially useful signs to monitor. Nebuliser Treatment is not routinely needed for every child; a clinician decides after assessment.
Care at home
Offer smaller, more frequent feeds and keep the child comfortably upright while awake and supervised. Clear visible nasal mucus gently, keep smoke and strong scents away, and check regularly, including during sleep. Use only medicines recommended for the child’s age and weight; avoid cough remedies unless a clinician advises them. Wash hands and avoid close contact with vulnerable babies while the child is unwell.
Record feeds, wet nappies, temperature and any change in breathing. A child who is alert, drinking reasonably and breathing without marked effort can usually be observed with clear safety-net advice.
Breathing warning signs
Seek emergency care if the child has blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe chest pulling-in, grunting, extreme sleepiness or cannot drink. Arrange urgent assessment for steadily faster breathing, much fewer wet nappies, repeated vomiting, worsening wheeze or a fever in a very young infant. Do not wait for a cough to become severe before seeking help when feeding or breathing is deteriorating.
Ask at the assessment
Ask how to count breathing, which feeding changes matter, how often to check overnight, and what temperature or breathing signs should trigger review. Confirm whether inhaled treatment has a role and how to reduce spread to siblings or relatives at higher risk.

Questions people ask
Does bronchiolitis need antibiotics?
Usually not, because bronchiolitis is generally viral; a clinician checks whether another infection is present.
Can a child sleep with bronchiolitis?
Sleep is helpful, but check regularly and seek help if breathing effort, colour, alertness or feeding worsens.
