What should you know about mid back flank pain?

Pain at the side of the back may follow lifting, twisting, prolonged sitting, or a strain and may change when you move or press the area. Kidney Stones can cause intense, wave-like pain that travels toward the groin, sometimes with nausea or blood in the urine. A Kidney Infection may cause flank pain with fever, chills, feeling ill, or urinary symptoms. A Urinary Tract Infection more often causes burning or frequent urination, but symptoms can spread upward. Digestive, nerve, rib, and skin conditions are other possibilities.

Notice whether the pain is linked to movement, meals, urination, or your menstrual cycle, and record its onset and progression. Gentle movement may help a muscular ache; avoid heavy lifting while it settles. Drink normally unless a clinician has restricted fluids, and do not use leftover antibiotics. Arrange a medical review when pain persists, returns, interferes with sleep, or comes with urinary changes. A clinician may examine your back and abdomen and request urine testing or imaging.

Seek urgent help for severe sudden pain, fever with flank pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, or pain with new weakness or numbness. Emergency assessment is also needed after significant injury or when back pain occurs with loss of bladder or bowel control.
