What should you know about microneedling with exosomes?

A clinician moves a sterile device across the skin to create tiny, controlled channels. A preparation containing exosomes may then be applied to the treated surface. Exosomes are small membrane-bound particles released by cells; they are not the same as stem cells, and their contents can differ between products.

The aim is to support the skin's repair response and improve texture or the appearance of fine lines, acne marks, or uneven tone. It may be considered for concerns such as melasma or sun-damaged skin, although the plan should match the diagnosis and skin type. Exosome products are not interchangeable: ask what the product contains, where it was manufactured, how it is stored, and whether it is authorised for the proposed use in the UAE.

Redness, warmth, tightness, mild swelling, and sensitivity can occur after microneedling. Irritation may be more noticeable when an additional product is applied to freshly treated skin. Results develop gradually and are not guaranteed; several sessions or a different treatment may be more appropriate.

Before treatment, disclose active acne, eczema, cold sores, keloid scarring, recent tanning, allergies, medicines, and any tendency to prolonged pigmentation. The clinician should examine the skin and explain whether the exosome product is being used topically rather than injected.

Follow the clinic's aftercare instructions. Common precautions include gentle cleansing, avoiding picking or scrubbing, limiting heat and intense exercise while the skin is irritated, and using broad-spectrum sun protection. Do not apply unapproved products to the treated area, and pause irritating skincare ingredients until the clinician says they can be restarted.

A standard microneedling session without exosomes may be a simpler comparison. Depending on the concern, alternatives can include fractional laser treatment or RF microneedling.

Contact the treating clinic if redness, swelling, pain, warmth, or discharge is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop spreading rash, blisters, fever, or marked tenderness. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, faintness, or other signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Do not conceal a new reaction with makeup or another active product before receiving advice. A clinician may need to distinguish expected irritation from infection, allergy, or a flare of an underlying skin condition.

Ask which diagnosis the treatment is intended to address, what evidence supports this particular product, and whether the product is authorised for topical use. Ask how sterility is maintained, how the vial is identified and stored, who will perform the procedure, and what alternatives are available if your skin is prone to pigmentation or scarring.
