Microneedling for sun damage: what to know

A pen with fine needles makes controlled, shallow openings in the skin. The healing response can encourage new collagen and gradual remodelling of uneven texture. Sun-damaged skin can include fine lines, roughness, enlarged pores, and patchy colour, and microneedling may address texture more directly than pigment. Melasma or another pigment condition may need a different plan, because skin inflammation can sometimes deepen discolouration.

Treatment depth, skin tone, the amount of existing damage, and your tendency to form dark marks all affect suitability. A clinician should examine changing spots rather than treating over an undiagnosed lesion.

Choose a qualified medical provider who can distinguish photoaging from pigment disorders and suspicious lesions. Discuss recent tanning, active acne, eczema, cold sores, medicines, and any history of raised scars. Follow the provider’s instructions about pausing irritating products and arrive with clean skin.

Afterward, expect temporary redness, warmth, tightness, or mild swelling. Use the recommended gentle cleanser and moisturiser, protect the treated area from sunlight with clothing and a broad-spectrum sunscreen, and avoid picking, heat, swimming, and harsh exfoliants until the surface has settled. Results develop gradually and may require a planned series.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, swelling, blistering, crusting, or redness is worsening instead of settling, or if the skin becomes increasingly dark or light in patches. Seek prompt medical advice for pus, spreading warmth, fever, or eye-area swelling. A new, bleeding, rapidly changing, or non-healing spot needs assessment rather than cosmetic treatment.
