Microneedling Pre-Care: How to Prepare Your Skin

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled openings in the skin. Your clinician may postpone treatment if the area has an active infection, open wound, significant irritation, or a flare of a skin condition. A consultation helps confirm the treatment area, needle depth, expected recovery, and whether another option such as fractional laser treatment or RF microneedling better fits your concern.

Mention a history of poor wound healing, raised scars, cold sores, bleeding problems, immune conditions, allergies, and current or recent medicines. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without the prescriber’s advice. If you are treating pigmentation or sun-damaged skin, ask how your skin tone and recent sun exposure affect the plan.

Follow the clinic’s instructions about cleansing and pausing products. Avoid arriving with makeup, sunscreen residue, or heavy skincare unless the clinic tells you otherwise. Keep the area gently moisturised if it is dry, and avoid picking, waxing, or irritating exfoliation before treatment.

Protect the treatment area from sun and tell the clinic about tanning or sunburn. Arrange a simple aftercare routine with a gentle cleanser, bland moisturiser, and suitable sun protection. Ask whether numbing cream is needed and who should apply it, because use and timing vary with the treatment area and device.

Contact the clinic before attending if you develop a cold sore, spreading redness, pus, a fever, a new rash, or a painful skin flare near the planned area. These changes can alter whether treatment should go ahead.

After treatment, seek prompt medical advice for worsening pain, marked swelling, blistering, pus, fever, or redness that continues to spread. Mild warmth, tightness, and redness can occur, but your clinician should explain what is expected for your skin and device.

Ask: Which products should I pause, and when can I restart them? Is my current skin condition settled enough for treatment? What should I use immediately afterward? How will you reduce the risk of irritation or pigment change for my skin tone? Who should I contact if the treated area worsens?
