Microneedling and keloids: what to know

Microneedling creates controlled skin injuries to stimulate repair. That healing response can be excessive in keloid-prone skin, causing a firm scar to grow beyond the original injury. A consultation is essential before treating the face or body, even when the planned area has not previously formed a keloid.

A keloid is a raised, sometimes itchy or tender scar that extends past the edges of the original wound. Needling can add many small injuries at once, and the resulting inflammation may stimulate unwanted scar tissue. Having a keloid after an operation, piercing, injection, acne lesion, or minor cut is useful information for the clinician. A personal or close family history can also affect the plan.
