Short answer

Methylene blue light therapy uses a light-sensitive substance with a selected light source and should be provided by a trained clinician after skin assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this treatment means

The approach is intended to create a controlled light-activated effect in the treated skin. The clinician determines whether methylene blue is appropriate, which light device is used and how the area is protected. It is different from simply using a household lamp or an unregulated home device.

The treatment may be discussed for acne and inflammatory pimples, but visible improvement depends on the cause and severity of the skin problem. Redness, warmth, temporary staining or irritation can occur. Tell the clinician about medicines, photosensitivity, active skin disease and previous reactions before treatment.

How to prepare and care for skin

Attend a consultation before booking treatment so the clinician can examine the skin and review your products and medicines. Follow instructions about cleansing, shaving, sun exposure and products to pause. Arrive with clean skin unless the clinic gives different instructions.

Afterward, use the recommended gentle cleanser and moisturiser, avoid picking treated pimples and protect the area from strong sunlight as directed. Do not add exfoliating acids or irritating products until the skin has settled. Ask whether a series of sessions or another acne plan is more suitable.

When to seek care

Contact the clinic promptly for severe pain, increasing swelling, blistering, marked redness, discharge, eye symptoms or a rash outside the treated area. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or sudden vision changes.

If acne is deep, scarring, rapidly worsening or affecting your wellbeing, arrange a dermatology review rather than relying on light therapy alone. A clinician can distinguish acne from another condition and select treatment accordingly.

Questions for your doctor

What exactly will be applied and which light source will be used? Is this suitable for my skin type and acne pattern? Which medicines or products should I pause? What aftercare and warning signs should I expect? What alternatives are available?

Questions people ask

Is methylene blue light therapy the same as an LED panel?

Not necessarily. The substance, light source and protocol may differ, so ask the provider to explain the device and steps.

Can I use a home light after treatment?

Only if your clinician specifically recommends it and explains safe use; devices and skin responses vary.
