What should you know about metamucil bloating?

Short answer
Metamucil can cause bloating or gas when psyllium fibre is started or increased, especially if the dose changes quickly or fluids are limited.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Active fibre
- Psyllium, which absorbs water and adds stool bulk

- If pain, vomiting, obstruction symptoms or persistent bloating occurs
Why psyllium may cause bloating
Psyllium absorbs water and adds bulk to stool. Gut bacteria can also ferment some fibre, producing gas; this may cause fullness, rumbling or abdominal distension while your digestion adjusts. Bloating may be more noticeable when you start with a large serving, swallow it without enough fluid, or increase fibre while your usual diet remains unchanged. Persistent symptoms are not necessarily from Metamucil. Conditions such as [Irritable Bowel Syndrome](/conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/), [Food Intolerance](/conditions/food-intolerance/) or [Coeliac Disease](/conditions/coeliac-disease/) can also cause bloating and need separate assessment.
How to reduce discomfort
Follow the product directions and mix each serving with enough liquid to make it easy to swallow. Start cautiously if a clinician or pharmacist agrees, then increase gradually rather than making a sudden change. Drink fluids regularly unless you have been told to restrict them. Gentle walking and slower eating may reduce trapped gas. Take psyllium away from other medicines when advised, because fibre can affect how some products are absorbed. Stop and seek advice if swallowing becomes difficult, chest pain develops, or abdominal pain is severe. A pharmacist can check whether the product suits your bowel pattern and medicines.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen hard abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, or trouble breathing after swallowing the product. Arrange a medical review for blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, ongoing diarrhoea or constipation, or bloating that continues despite changing how you take the fibre. If symptoms follow certain foods, keep a food and symptom diary and ask about [Nutrition Counselling](/treatments/lifestyle-and-wellness/nutrition-counselling/).
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Is psyllium suitable for my symptoms? How should I adjust the serving and fluid intake? Could another condition explain the bloating? Should I use a different fibre or arrange testing?

Questions people ask
Should I stop Metamucil if I feel bloated?
Do not continue through severe symptoms. For mild gas or fullness, speak with a pharmacist or clinician about a slower adjustment, fluid intake and whether another cause is possible.
Can Metamucil make constipation worse?
It can if taken without enough fluid or when an obstruction is present. Severe pain, vomiting, or inability to pass stool or gas requires urgent assessment.
