What should you know about Imogam rabies?

Imogam contains ready-made antibodies against rabies. It is used as part of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis for people who have not previously completed rabies vaccination and whose exposure may have allowed the virus to enter through a bite, scratch, or contact with saliva. The product is infiltrated into and around the wound when possible; any remaining amount is given as directed by the treating team. It is not a substitute for the rabies vaccine, and it is not used to treat established rabies symptoms.

Wash the wound promptly with soap and plenty of running water, then seek urgent medical care even if the wound looks minor or the animal is unavailable. Tell the clinician when the contact occurred, where it happened, what animal was involved, whether skin was broken, and whether saliva touched the eyes, mouth, or an open wound. Do not delay while trying to observe the animal or locate records. The care team will decide whether Imogam, vaccine, wound treatment, and other measures are needed.

A possible rabies exposure needs same-day urgent assessment because prevention works before symptoms begin. Go immediately after a bite, scratch, or saliva exposure from a mammal that may carry rabies. Emergency symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, confusion, agitation, weakness, or unusual sensitivity to air or water require emergency care, but do not wait for these symptoms before seeking prevention. Contact the treating service promptly if a dose is missed or an injection site becomes increasingly painful, swollen, or infected.
