What should you know about an Ig blood test?

Short answer

An Ig blood test measures immunoglobulin proteins made by the immune system, helping a clinician investigate infection, inflammation, immune problems, or selected blood disorders.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How Ig results are used

The report may name an immunoglobulin class such as IgG, IgA, or IgM. A result can reflect recent or past immune activity, reduced antibody production, or a condition affecting another organ; it does not identify one diagnosis by itself. The meaning depends on the reference range, the reason for testing, medicines, age, and other results. Clinicians may consider conditions such as [Anaemia](/conditions/anaemia/), [Chronic Kidney Disease](/conditions/chronic-kidney-disease/), or [Coeliac Disease](/conditions/coeliac-disease/) when the wider picture fits.

Preparing and following up

Ask whether fasting is needed and tell the phlebotomist about medicines, supplements, pregnancy, and recent infections. A blood draw usually involves a brief needle prick; follow the laboratory or clinic instructions. Keep the complete report rather than focusing on a single flagged value. Your clinician may compare it with a blood count, inflammation tests, or targeted tests and decide whether repeat testing is useful.

When to contact a clinician

Discuss an unexpected result with the clinician who ordered it, especially if you have recurrent infections, prolonged fever, weight change, swollen glands, diarrhoea, or persistent fatigue. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, collapse, severe dehydration, or rapidly worsening illness. An Ig result should not be used alone to diagnose [Brucellosis](/conditions/brucellosis/), [Dengue Fever](/conditions/dengue-fever/), or [Glandular Fever](/conditions/glandular-fever/).

Questions to ask

Which Ig class was measured? Is the result high, low, or within the laboratory range? What does it mean alongside my symptoms? Do I need another test or follow-up?

Questions people ask

Does an abnormal Ig result prove an infection?

No. The result needs clinical context and may reflect immune activity, past exposure, reduced antibody production, or another condition.

Do I need to fast for an Ig blood test?

Not always. Follow the instructions from the ordering clinician or laboratory because preparation depends on the full set of tests.
