What should you know about idiopathic mastitis?

Mastitis can cause tenderness, warmth, swelling, redness, or a firm area in one breast. Some people also feel generally unwell. The word idiopathic means that an infection, blocked duct, injury, medication effect, or another obvious explanation has not been established. It does not mean the symptoms are imagined or that no evaluation is needed.

A clinician may ask about breastfeeding, recent breast changes, fever, medicines, and how quickly the symptoms appeared. Examination helps distinguish inflammation from an abscess or another breast problem. Symptoms can overlap, so persistent or unusual changes should be reassessed.

Arrange a clinical review, particularly if the area is not improving. Continue feeding or expressing if you are breastfeeding and it is comfortable, but avoid forceful massage or excessive pumping, which can worsen swelling. A cool pack, supportive bra, rest, fluids, and suitable pain relief may help. A lactation consultation can help check positioning, latch, and milk removal.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, a soft fluctuant lump, or feeling faint or very unwell. Arrange follow-up for a lump, skin change, nipple change, or inflammation that persists despite initial care. Urgent assessment is appropriate if symptoms worsen quickly.

Ask what findings support inflammation, whether imaging is needed, how to monitor the area, and when you should return if it does not settle. If breastfeeding, ask whether a feeding assessment could reduce pressure on the breast.
